The story goes that one day one of Ali’s followers went to Damascus, an area controlled by Muawiyah. While Ali’s follower was just taking a nap, he saw that a local man from Damascus was trying to steal his camel. Ali’s follower stopped the thief, but the thief from Damascus replied: “This camel belongs to me. I know it because she gave birth to all my other camels”. Ali’s follower first thought that the man from Damascus was joking. But when he realized it was all serious, he replied: “First, this is a male camel, and second he is certainly mine.”
After a small fight, both guys went to Muawiyah to solve their dispute. But Muawiyah insisted that the man from Damuscus was the rightful owner, claiming that the ‘female’ camel belonged to him. Ali’s follower was terribly shocked by this decision. He protested and asked Muawiyah for a fair settlement. Muawiyah said: “ok, let’s ask the people, they will tell the truth”. But all the people from Damascus insisted that the male camel was a female one and that 'she' belonged to the the thief. At the end, Ali’s follower lost his camel.
Finally, Muawiyah talked privately to Ali’s follower and said: “Off course, you and I both know very well that this the camel was yours and he was a male. But now, go back to Ali and tell him that he is fighting against someone who has an army of blind followers that even won’t see the difference between a male and female camel.”
So, I think that Trump is smart enough to realize that things he says do not represent the truth. But as long as there is a majority that will blindly follow his alternative facts, this is functional in giving other people a clear message.
